In ‘being a sanctuary’…..

I invite us, the Body of Christ, to take a reflective and honest journey - as we look at where we currently are as the Church where we can go from here. Starting with the choice of being sanctuaries.

What is a sanctuary exactly? A sanctuary is just a room in a building with no purpose.

That is - until people fill that room.

That’s why a sanctuary isn’t really a place but a people. Church is not a building, but a people. Or at least it ought to be. It seems that the world is highly confused about Christianity and even some Christian’s are too - but we are the ones who have confused them and it’s time for that to shift. It’s time for us to return to the radical way of Jesus,

which is to be sacred, soft, and safe.

To be sanctuaries that live out God’s truth, compassion, and dignity for all….

  • To return to the Bible as our guide and no longer be complacent with a passive approach towards biblical truth and sanctification.

  • To seek compassion as a foundation and no longer lack compassion around differences and people’s trauma.

  • To pursue justice as an active path and no longer be performative with our justice and dignity towards others.

We don’t have to settle for an unhealthy Church or just always being weary of the state of the Church. We can help the Body of Christ heal, change, and be holy - but it starts with us repenting, remembering, and restorng.

why this book, why this message...

This book walks through 3 approaches...

  • Being Sacred: Bible based

Exploring what it means to be a Bible-based Body of Christ. It invites us to no longer choose passivity toward the way the Bible calls us to be the church and to move toward a place of responsibility for the work we need to do to restore health. It calls us to be sacred and to repent of the ways we’ve made church, our lives, and even our thinking self/secular-based instead of Bible-based.

  • Being Soft: Trauma-Informed

Navigating what it means to be a trauma-informed Body of Christ. It explores care, being the church to the wounded, and unhealthy practices the church is using that aren’t trauma informed. It shows how we can shift from colliding to being compassionate with one another and the world even amid differences - including race, theology, political ‘stance’, and other areas we need to be softer in.

  • Being Safe: Justice Centered

Reflecting on being a justice-centered Body of Christ. It examines what justice and injustice are, what the Bible says about them, how we can live justly, and why the topic of justice should matter to all Christians and not just to those who are called to justice work. This part shows that Jesus was not a mere observer of injustice but a responder to injustice and how we can be that too, daily and practically.
